Benefits of Salt-Water Rinses

Salt-water rinses were used as early as 1600 B.C. by Ancient Egyptians. Salt-water rinses reduce oral bacteria by increasing the pH balance of your mouth. Other mouthwashes may irritate mucous membranes of the mouth, but salt water will not. Other potential benefits include:

  • Helps with bad breath
  • Can help with tooth aches
  • Reduces colds
  • Can help soothe swollen gums
  • Can help soothe a sore throat
  • Reduces plaque
  • Cost-effective

Although there are many benefits, you do not want to rinse with salt water more than 3-4 times per week, or it can start to have negative effects on your teeth. Salt-water rinses are highly effective after an oral surgery procedure. If you have any questions, you can reach our office at (206) 561-2345.
